Dr. Hofkirchner is the president of the Institute for a Global Sustainable Information Society (GSIS). He was University Professor for Internet and Society from 2004 to 2010 at the University of Salzburg, Austria, and retired as Associate Professor in Technology Assessment at the Vienna University of Technology. He is affiliated to the Institute of Visual Computing and Human-centred Technology at the Faculty of Informatics, holding his venia legendi of Technology Assessment throughout all Austrian universities. Being educated as Political Scientist and Psychologist, he has been working since in the field of Science-Technology-Society. He investigated and taught at the University of León and the Open University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain, and was Guest Professor at the Federal University of Bahía, Salvador, Brazil. His fields of expertise comprise: Complexity Thinking, Sciences of Information, and ICTs and Society.
He counts more than 260 publications. He has a decisive record of research in transdisciplinary studies. He has supervised a number of PhD doctorates and postdoctoral research. He carries out research on systems thinking, from systems philosophy to evolutionary systems theory to critical social systems theory, critical design theory, and critical information society theory. Currently he is working on an extension of systems and information theory to the evolution of societies in the information age.
