== 2.1 Existence of God by Anselm of Canterbury ==
Anselm was looking in his book Proslogion “a single argument that needed nothing but itself
alone for proof, that would by itself be enough to show that God really exist.” Anselms intention
was to give believers an intellectual foundation to proof their faith. It must be retained that
Anselm’s arguments aren’t always rational.8,9
• Anselm defines God as a "being than which no greater can be conceived." Further he
understands God as something complete and perfect.
• On precondition of Anselms argument is, that existence is part of completeness and more
valuable than something non-existing .
• If a person thinks of God, the person has, according to Anselm, God in its mind.
• But this cannot be, according to Anselm, because it contradicts the definition of God, as an
entity greater cannot be conceived. Because as soon the person has God in its mind,
something greater can also be conceived: “God in Reality”. But since something existing has
always more value than something non-existing, so God cannot be thought of something not
existing. Therefor God needs to exist.
Anselms proof of existence was refuted much later by Immanuel Kant.8,9
