Rainer Ernst Zimmermann (b. 9 November 1951 in Berlin) is a philosopher and natural scientist. His research areas are metaphysics and philosophy of nature, philosophy of science (in relation to theories of quantum gravity) and their ethical consequences. Some of his foci are discourse theories of spaces, networks and (evolutionary) systems and their application to the concrete design of urban social spaces.
Zimmermann first studied physics and mathematics at the TU Berlin, later as a DAAD scholarship holder at Imperial College London (1973/74), where he obtained the Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) in Mathematical Physics, and finally at the FU Berlin, where he completed his studies in 1975 with a diploma in physics and a doctorate in mathematics in 1977. He subsequently studied philosophy, history and literature at the TU Berlin and also received his doctorate in philosophy in 1988.
He was appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich in 1995. In 1998 he habilitated in the field of natural philosophy at the University of Kassel. From 2000 to 2005 he was head of the Kassel team in an INTAS cooperation with Vienna, Kiev and Moscow. In the winter of 1999/2000 he held a visiting professorship at the University of Cambridge. Zimmermann is still a life member of Clare Hall (Cambridge University). This was followed in 2003 by a visiting professorship at the Istituto di Studi Avanzati of the University of Bologna, in 2006 at the ICT&S of the University of Salzburg, in 2010/2011 at the CMS of the TU Berlin and in 2014 at the Department of Computer Science of the TU Vienna. He has also been an elected member of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetics Sciences (Vienna) since November 2011.
Zimmermann is the founder of the journal System & Struktur (New Journal for Speculative Physics), which he edited himself from 1992 to 1999, partly together with Klaus-Jürgen Grün. Since 2007, he has been the editor of the Münchener Schriften zur Design Science, Aachen, together with Professor Michael Keller. Since 2018, he has also edited the yearbook Signifikant (xenomoi, Berlin). He is also co-founder, academic director and chairman of the board of the non-profit Institute for Design Science München e.V. Zimmermann has served several times on the board of the Ernst Bloch Society and the Ernst Bloch Association. From 2013 to 2020 he was an elected member of the Leibniz-Sozietät der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, and in 2019 he was elected president of this learned society until July 2020.

He amounts over 400 publications, including a number of books ranging from natural to social sciences, ethics and aesthetics.
