A stable periodic regime of oscillations.
Various collaborators of PRIGOGINE, members of the so-called Brussels School, experimenting with chemical systems (for example the BELOUSOV —'ZHABOTINSKY reaction: the oxydation of malonic acid by potassium bromate, in presence of cerium ions), discovered “… The existence of a stable periodic regime which corresponds to the alternation of a rapid phase of chemical waves propagating toward the center and a slow phase tending to homogenize the system” ('G. NICOLIS & I. PRIGOGINE, 1977, p.100).
Stationary waves are closely related to dissipative structuration. They maintain themselves as long as the system remains nonlinear.
It would be quite interesting to research stationary waves in biological and social systems
