Draft talk:Moral relativism

From glossaLAB

Dear Thomas,

It was a pleasure enjoying your participation in the seminar "A Journey through Philosophy. What do you know when you get information?" I'm sure you got to see the importante of considering in depth one of the basic questions of philosophy as it is "what should I do?" in order to find solid roots to moral action and its relation to knowledge and truth. Even though there are several drawbacks in your contribution: The conception of morality by any author or school is not well represented or understood (pitifully, you didn't review the work of any relevant author, at the same time that you misunderstood some moral theories. The utilitarian point of view is stressed to show the necessary relativity of moral systems, but this can also be predicated for deontological ethics, virtue ethics, etc. At the same time these other perspectives are not well understood. Regarding the general conception of your contribution: the intention to make clear definitions followed by demonstrations is not a bad strategy, but the elements has to be much better defined to do so (moral system, complete moral system, quantified utility, etc). Spinoza's Ethics is a good example to follow. On the other hand, considering the opposition of Kant's ethics to your thesis, you should have consider his argument of a categorical imperative against your position. In any case, regarding your seminar assignment and participation, you achieved most of its objectives, particularly your readiness to discuss the ideas of others.

I hope that through the considerations of the topics held during the lectures, the open discussions, and particularly through your own inquiries, you got to appreciate the importance of embracing a critical stance towards what simply has the appearance of being the case. Pitifully there's a lot of mis- and dis-information around and it is important to keep critical.

I wish you a successful career, and in case you think I may be of any help don't hesitate to contact me. All the best,
