A characteristic of “a system which is very susceptible to intrusion since there are insufficient connections between the parts for the system to maintain integrity” (T.F.H. ALLEN & T.B. STARR, 1982, p.280).
This definition seems to apply nicely to overextended systems.
An obvious application can be made to ancient empires whose overextended communication lines combined with the resulting time lags in the transmission of information tended to push them toward their desintegration, mainly through the intrusion of alien groups and the emergence of local powers.
