This expression has been proposed by L. THAYER as different from 'teleologic'. It refers to: “… what man can do, even if we have no more evidence for that capacity than what a few men have achieved… The term is not entirely satisfactory, but we need some concept to account for the fact that men, unlike their fellow creatures, can undertake to become (socially, psychologically, etc.) what they are not” (1972, p.105).
Man, as a hypercomplex system, has many virtual possibilities that will normally remain unused, but could be waken up by some unexpected stimulus.
