G. KLIR states: “Two kinds of inconsistency in structure are distinguished in R.A.: Local and global inconsistencies. Local inconsistency pertains only to variables that are shared by two or more elements of the given structure system. Any two elements that share some variables are locally inconsistent if their characterizations of the shared variables are not exactly the same. A structure system is globally inconsistent if all parts of its elements are locally consistent and, yet, the reconstruction family is empty.
- “Local inconsistencies are usually caused by the fact that the individual elements of a structure system are not perfect models of reality. They are developed from or validated by different data sets, each of which is incomplete, imprecise, or otherwise imperfect in some specific sense peculiar to it. Hence, local inconsistencies are a result of our ignorance regarding the subsystems involved and, consequently, it is maningful to try to resolve them by a suitable method. At this time, however, research in this area is still in its infancy.
- “Local as well as global inconsistences can also be treated by rejecting the information that creates them.”(1986, p.269)
