E. BUCHBERGER adds that the role of the knowledge engineer is to built the knowledge base of the expert system, starting from the expert's knowledge to create representations of the same, compatible and intelligible within the expert system, and to introduce in it an inference engine, i.e. a device apt to reach conclusions by combining the elements of the knowledge base in accordance with definite rules (Inference rules) (Ibid).
