In a communication device: “An encoding code which correctly identifies messages that contain transmission errors of up to a certain number per message, without the ability to correct them.”

K. KRIPPENDORFF, also author of the definition, again adds that: “A code is error detecting only if the HAMMING distance between the messages sent, exceeds the number of transmission errors per message” (1986, p.28).
