- “The variety that a system is able to show during a given interval of time” (J.L.LE MOIGNE, 1977, p.167).
This quite significant complement to the concept of variety was introduced by VAN COURT HARE (quoted by LE MOIGNE).
Of course, most systems are only able at a given moment to use a reduced part of their total variety. Thus, even if they count, in principle, with the requisite variety, it does not follow from this that they will be able to use it.
This potential problem seems quite serious for complex systems of very wide dimensions, doubtless partly due to the length of their communications lines.
