The displacement of an element in an ordered set .

A change of location of a part or element within the whole to which it belongs.

The properties of the whole can be quite seriously affected by such a change.

Translocation sometimes occurs in arrays of DNA. An example in micro-biology is the displacement of a gene within a chromosome.

However, this phenomenon seems general in character and leads to the reorganization of the system. In many cases its general organization and functional activity is more or less deeply modified.
