The span of time decided upon by an observer to study the dynamics of a system.
T. BAUMGARTNER et al state: “… in many instances the very choice of time frame and research setting will determine whether or not, and to what degree, there is apparent system closure and stability (or their opposites)” (1976, p.39).
Disregarding this apparently obvious prescription has led to numerous disasters, because in many cases, closure and stability are assumed over any span of time.
The unforeseen (believe it or not!) drying of the Aral Sea is a good example.
