A system made of different classes of complementary components and subsystems.

Any system is heterogeneous, but it is a matter of degree. Heterogeneity is a necessity, in accordance to the law of requisite variety, for good adaptiveness. Heterogeneity does not however precludes organization, which is needed for coherence.

The most complex systems are also the most heterogeneous ones.
