“Any structural difference between a message sent and the message received” (R.L. ACKOFF & F.E. EMERY, 1972, p.182).

These authors, who introduce the notion, make a curious comment: “Even if a message is not changed structurally, it may not be received (that is, interpreted or decoded) as it was sent. What is intended as a compliment by A may be interpreted as an insult by B: ”You look so much younger than you are“ (Ibid).

Is this not stretching the notion too much?
