The fraction of a message that is unnecessary if no noise must be overcomed.
Syntactical redundacy is related to the knowledge the receiver has of the code used. For example, in the word “quite” the letter “u” could be generally omitted, because it is well known by English-speaking persons that the letter “q” is always followed by the letter “u”.
