The cross-over from one state to another in a system.
This cross-over can be strictly determined, probabilistic as in ergodic systems, or mean a deep change in the nature of the system, as in chaotic dynamics.
For the purpose of modelling along reconstructability analysis lines, G. KLIR introduces the state-transition system, “defined in terms of a set of overall states based upon a particular mask and a specification of conditions for transitions between these states. Epistemologically highest in this early version of the hierarchy is a structure system, which is defined as a set of interacting behavior or state-transition systems” (1991, p.345).
The mask represents the intentions of the modelizer, in relation to her/his specific interests.
