According to E. LASZLO, it appears that energy flows “have intrinsic stability in specific configurations” (1974, p.207).
He recognizes the following stability strata: atoms, molecules and crystals, macromolecules aggregates, cells, multicellular organisms, self-contained coordinated populations (ecosystems).
We would add social systems, maybe even in the very basic sense that every stability stratum corresponds precisely to the shaping of social links within wholes.
The concept of stability strata also appears in C. BRESCH's more recent work (1987), and at least in an implicit way in various other authors, as for example J. MILLER's levels of organization in living systems.
