G. BATESON gives the following example of iconic signal: “The bared fang at a given instant may mention an attack which, if and when it occurs, will include a new baring of the fangs” (1973, p.393).

This supposes that the receiver is able to understand what he perceives with its correct meaning within a formerly learned context, i.e., any signal supposes common understanding of a shared coded context.
