The relations among “various procedures (that) mutually support each other and form a more or less coherent pattern of ”standard operating procedures“ (A. HAUAN et al., 1992, p.1061).
According to A. HAUAN, J.A. JOHANNESSEN and J. OLAISEN, who introduced the concept: “The overall functioning of an organization… is to a large extent dependent on the qualities of the collective-level routines”.
As various participants are bearers of different routines, the authors add: “Heterogeneous groups are preferred to homogeneous groups, to enhance complementarity and avoid standardisation, fragmentation and segmenting of patterns of thought and behavior”.
The concept seems to be an application to social organization of BATESON's ideas.
