A strategy resorting to the use of “a large number of low energy organisms whose short life span is compensated for by a very high rate of reproduction” (R.N. ADAMS, 1988, p.134).
This strategy, based on quick replacement, is opposite to the K-stategy. It is convenient in turbulent conditions, with a high rate of disturbances.
According to ADAMS: “Nonhierarchical organizations are more like the r-strategy”. Moreover: “r-type organizations can fragment and still retain their capacity to survive in refugee areas” (Ibid).
The concept has been applied in ecology by R. MARGALEF and seems significant for, at least, small human systems.
