L. CARROLL 's Red Queen parable in “Alice in Wonderland” alludes to the need to run evermore swiftly in order to be able to stay in the same place.
This strange metaphor now becomes a parable about competing co-evolution of species (or organizations). A favorable adaptation in one — for example, a predator — may bring negative results to the other, the prey. This orients the evolutive adaptation of the latter in such a way to countervail the negative effect. After much “running”, both species find themselves in the same relation.
D. HILLIS has now modelized this process on his connection machine, showing that this is a general model for countervailing evolutive processes.
