M. EIGEN defines the quasi-species as a population of molecules of similar composition (1992).

The concept seems applicable to homogeneous populations in general.

Different quasi-species may have distinct rates of correct replication in different environments and in this way, they become subject to selective influences and start to diverge from each other.
