Practically any kind of complex patterns can be generated by an appropriate set of rules, at least in a structured space, invariable in time.

Rules for creation, reproduction, ways of propagation, survival and destruction of elements are needed.

The idea of rules generated patterns led to J.von NEUMANN cellular automata, to J. CONWAY's game of life and to M. MARUYAMA mutual causal (deviation-amplification) models of systems self-construction.

Generating rules are also fundamental for the development of networks.

Some rules generated patterns may become partly or totally stabilized with time, i.e. are potential genetic algorithms.
