The character of “a living system which does not itself carry out all critical subsystem processes” J.G. MILLER, 1978, p.18).
- “A partipotential system must interact with other systems that can carry out the processes which it does not, or it will not survive. To supply the missing processes, partipotential systems must be parasitic on, or symbiotic with other living or nonliving systems” (p.18-9).
The evolution of numerous individuals toward a growing degree of symbiosis could be considered as a significant step toward sociality, i.e. to the emergence of a system integrated on a higher level of complexity.
