Organization may be understood as a pattern (in contrast to random distribution of elements):

- either in space, as a stable structure

- or in time, as a changing structure

E. MORIN proposes three different types of organization, understood as a process evolving in time:

- Re-organization, which expresses diachronic transformation;

- Self-organization, which corresponds to closure of the system by recursion, and autonomy;

- Eco-organization, which expresses the systems openness on its environment (after MORIN, 1990).
