The search for the best possible way to reach the best possible state of a system.

The global optimization of a complex system is a permanently renewed transaction between stable or changing constraints bearing upon different functions, all needed for the survival of the system. In S. KAUFFMAN words: “In such optimization searches, many parts and processes must become coordinated to achieve some measure of overall success, but conflicting ”design constraints“ limit the results achieved” (1993, p.33).
