Objects of reference are obtained through a “mapping process (that) cuts the action -relevant external object qualities from the environmental background to constitute the needed true objects of reference within theorganization of the personalspace ”(Ibid.)
A good example is the way the driver observes a red trafic light, awaiting its switching to green to proceed on his way.
The rest of the scenery recedes from his intended perception, but his attention focused on the traffic light is simultaneously anticipatory and intentional . It is a step in the construction of a complex sequential behavior
