A global representation by a graph of the flows within a network.
Flows circulate from some compartments or boxes to others within the network. As an organized network is defined by specific constraints, not every compartment is communicated directly or indirectly with all other compartments.
H.T. ODUM states: “The number of possible boxes and the number of boxes actually utilized in the system are properties of the complexity of the network” (1971, p.37-8).
Quantitative representation of flows is better done through a matrix, which is however more abstract.
