J.W. SUTHERLAND describes as follows the unacceptable roots of expediency in modelization (a cause of not a few disasters in human systems in general):
- “We need a solution but lack an effective instrument to arrive at a solution (a problem which has haunted those who, for example, are trying to develop game-based models to attack sociopsychological behavior).
- “We need a solution, but to apply instruments congruent with the real properties (e.g., the true complexity) of the problem would be inefficient or economically infeasible — hence, for example, the tendency of operations research and industrial engineering practitioners to assume linearity in the face of evidently nonlinear phenomena” (1973, p.128).
The pseudo-solutions thus obtained are generally sub-optimal and sometimes, downright erroneous.
