“…a marking of the two distinguished states as being primary (”this“, ”I“, ”us“, etc.)” (J.A. GOGUEN and F.J. VARELA, 1979, p.32).

These authors observe: “… indeed it is the very purpose of the distinction to create this indication” (Ibid).

The purpose is, of course, the observer's one. Thus, “an observer can make a distinction into an indication through the imposition of his value” and, “Conversely, the distinctions made reveal the cognitive capabilities of the distinctor” (Ibid).

From another viewpoint: “It seems to be a general reflexion of the richness of natural systems that indication can be iterated to produce a hierarchy of levels” (p.33)
