According to R.C. CONANT, this class of hierarchies : “… is meant to include all hierarchical ”organisms“, in a broad sense, which have a dynamic, physical existence and for which the concept of survival (in the face of threats from the environment) is relevant”…

But “… 'conceptual' hierarchies such as language and music are not included” (1974, p.11).
