The propagation sequence of an energy input from one compartment or subsystem to another, throughout the whole system.
H. ODUM who introduces the concept writes: “If the energy arrives with repeating pulses, a train of transient peaks keeps repeating. Depending on the resistances, capacitances, and time delays introduced, the system's pulse may be damped out downstreams or reinforced to produce an oscillation. Thus, populations, economies, and radio networks may oscillate or be smoothed” (1971, p.261).
