An input-output matrix used to represent in a tabular form all the possible interconnexions within an ecosystem.

A non-existent interconnexion is represented in the matrix by 0 in the corresponding intersection.

The matrix is an alternate representation of the corresponding network diagram and its use has been proposed by H. ODUM. This author gives as an example a matrix of the steady state flows of carbon in a microcosm grouping CO2 , its organic storage and its living producers and users.

This form of representation allows for “… the use of techniques of matrix algebra by systems analysts” (1971, p.20-21).
