A permanent or recurrent excitation input which maintains activity in a system.

Such a drive factor reflects either some inherent internal instability of the system, or some external energetic stimulus. When sufficiently permanent, the drive factor leads to a nonequilibrium situation and eventually to dissipative structuration.
