The progressive differentiation and separation of processes in a system.
Divergence leads to the decrease of interactions among some parts of the system and is characterized by the slackening and possible final rupture of internal communication.
Divergence may lead to the break-up and dispersion of the system into unconnected parts.
Divergence and convergence
In a different meaning, as the opposite of convergence, divergence is the progressive drift of a process away from its planned development and may lead to great losses of resources and time. In any planned process, permanent or iterative monitoring of divergences should be provided for.
