The anormal lengthening of a complex process due to some small local perturbation.
The optimal development of a complex process is usually represented by a critical path model, where it can be observed that such a small local perturbation may diffuse in numerous subsequent branches of the process, leading to accumulative delay effects.
As explained by St. BEER, in such cases it is generally convenient to try to overhaul the whole of the program and try to compensate the initial perturbation through adequate action in order to avoid the development of an unmanageable situation (1968, p.192).
As a result, a new critical path is to be established.
The subject is obviously related to the control of chaos (E. OTT & M. SPANO, 1995).
