Elaboration and self-consumption of products within a system.

Many complex systems elaborate products for their own internal use.

H. ODUM gives the example of the photosynthetic production, which is generally measured as a flow between producers and consumers. However, as stated by ODUM: “The actual gross photosynthetic process is much greater than can be measured in this way, because there is fast internal cycling (making and using) in the day stimulated by photorespiration and by the impetus of storages in the various sites of reaction in the cells of the plants” (1971. p.50).

The same kind of erroneous evaluation results of the computing in strict terms of monetarised exchange the gross product of archaic peasants communities: what they produce for their own use is not taken in account.
