A critical decrease of possible alternatives for action due to a reduction of available space, usable resources and or a shortening of time limits.
Crunches corresponds to a limitation of the systems variety or diversity both in space and time. They generally appear quite suddenly, in relation to long or very long term exceptional accumulative effects.
R. THEOBALD emphasized the importance of “decision crunches” due to accelerating changes in the technical and social environment of human systems.(Template:Ency entity Conf.Asilomar,1994)
J. WEINS proposed the concept of environmental crunches, due to disturbances in ecosystems environments, which reduce resources and provoke a more intense competition within the system (1977, p.590-7).
