In composite systems, the subcritical states do not allow for a significative propagation of some local perturbation, obviously because the clusters generally are not linked.

In the critical state, the linkages lead to a considerable propagation of the initial perturbation.

In the supercritical states, the perturbation propagates itself to most of the system (sudden global chain reaction or runaway event).
