F. HEYLIGHEN describes as follows the complete evolutionary sequence leading from competition to cooperation: “… competition, communication, stable interaction patterns, internal models of patterns, shared models, shared replicators, cooperation promoted by shared replicators, integration with the shared replicators as coordinators” (1992b, p.25)

This is clearly a cybernetic model which includes for example G. PASK's “conversation”, with its reciprocal accomodation process (consensus — von FOERSTER cybernetics of second order), GABOR'S and Mac KAY'S “logon”, shaping of a hierarchy through the appearance of a regulator.

And, in E.von GLASERSFELD's words: “… the situation of reciprocal instrumentality has the potential of developing into collaboration” (1988, p.51).
