I agree with the idea of Vanessa, that data is factual, and also that it contributes to new discoveries. However, data is only the very basis and before it is useful, first, it needs to be turned into information and interpreted. Otherwise, it would not contribute to anything and just exist on its own. So effectively it only contributes indirectly to new discoveries.
