A population of elements (“behavioral atoms” in J. HOLLAND's terminology) in an adaptive system “which generates action sequences, and is modified on the basis of the outcome” (1992, p.155).

The behavioral unit is the very basic adaptive device in the system. Its behavior depends on its reactions to registered environmental effects . However these reactions depend also on the internal behavioral rules of the system.

HOLLAND's behavioral units seem to be indispensable for parallel distributed processing , as described by Mc CLELLAND et al., 1986)
