In the study of system's processes, it becomes very important to distinguish clearly between different types of trends:

- Linear or nonlinear

- asymptotic

- exponential, or logarithmic

- logistic

- cyclical

It is also of significance that some section of a curve, observed within a too short time bracket, may lead to erroneous interpretations concerning the trend as a whole.
