The threshold at which the rhythm of growth propagation of some phenomeno n ceases to be linear and becomes exponential (P. MARSDEN, 2000, p.46) .

The concept has been introduced by epidemiologists. It has however a much more general significance for many phenomena of similar behavioral characteristics. It should be compared with avalanches, self organized critical systems andpercolation models .

It has been proposed also in relation to the propagation of memes as “mental epidemics ” (M. GLADWELL, 2000)
