“A concrete system some of the components of which represent other objects” (M. BUNGE, 1993, p.212).

BUNGE gives languages as examples of symbolic systems. He extends however the definition as to cover: “… books, tapes, diskettes, blueprints, maquettes, toys, etc. On the other hand a stray symbol, such as a road sign, is not a system, though it may eventually become the founder of a symbolic system” (Ibid).
