A system that fluctuates more or less periodically between defined stability limits.
There is a great variety of oscillations modes, from the perfectly regular to the most complex, and even more or less random as in ergodic systems.
Probably all dynamically stable systems can be considered as oscillators, submitted, in HAKEN's terms, to an order parameter.
However, a system submitted to growing oscillations may run out of control, enter in a far-from-equilibrium situation, reach a bifurcation point and start to produce new dissipative structures. When (and if) it reaches a new minimum entropy producing equilibrium it turns to a new oscillating mode.
