A system composed of a subsystem of interconnected functional artefacts (the “machine”) and a human individual or groupal subsystem which steers or control it.

In our technological civilization, there are countless man-machine systems, which are evolving toward an ever-increasing complexity, generally characterized by a growing automation, and autonomy, of the machine subsystem.

Man-machine systems are the specific field of study of systems engineering.
