Any system which presents the two following characteristics:
1) It is influenced by the outside world, but only through certain defined processes, called inputs;
2) it exerts an influence on the external world, but only through certain defined processes called outputs (adapted form H. GRENIEWSKI, 1989).
This definition, by GRENIEWSKI and quoted by J.L.LE MOIGNE is reproduced here merely for information. An “almost \term”{isolated system}“ is clearly a ”somewhat open“ one (as appears from the definition itself) and as such, open or closed in space and time for specific inputs and outputs. Thus, while the described characteristic are in effect very general, it would be better to avoid GRENIEWSKI's terminology in this case.
