“The subsystem which places matter or energy at some location in the system, retains it over time, and retrieves it”.

This is one of the 20 critical subsystems in J.G. MILLER's taxonomy of living systems (1978, p.3). Obviously this term is a generic one which covers a variety of different specialized storage subsystems.
